Challenges

Mezaldy approached me to optimize their email marketing strategy. At the time, the business was experiencing rapid growth, with a strong focus on customer acquisition. As a result, key areas such as customer retention and email marketing had received little attention. While the number of new customers continued to grow, there was no structured strategy in place to retain and engage existing customers.

In a highly competitive and seasonal industry like fashion, customer retention is essential for driving sustainable growth.

Although weekly email campaigns were being sent through Brevo (formerly Sendinblue), there was no clear lifecycle marketing strategy in place. Customer segmentation was not being used, resulting in an email list filled with inactive subscribers, reduced deliverability, and low open rates.

Brevo’s limitations also made it difficult to build advanced email flows and gain meaningful insights from customer data. Combined with Mezaldy’s rapid growth, this prevented the business from unlocking the full potential of email marketing, leaving valuable opportunities to increase customer engagement, retention, and revenue untapped.

Oplossing & implementatie

Strategy and approach

To address these challenges, we developed a retention strategy focused on increasing customer retention, segmenting customers, and implementing lifecycle email flows tailored to each stage of the customer journey. The goal was to maximize customer lifetime value while improving the return on customer acquisition costs.

The strategy was implemented in several phases:

Before migrating to Klaviyo, the existing email list was cleaned and optimized. Inactive subscribers were identified and removed, ensuring that only active and engaged subscribers were migrated to Klaviyo. This immediately improved deliverability and open rates, creating a strong foundation for future email marketing efforts.
The second step was the migration from Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) to Klaviyo, a platform offering more advanced customer data analysis, segmentation, and marketing automation capabilities. All customer data, email lists, and historical data were successfully migrated. Throughout the migration, every effort was made to ensure that customer information – including email lists, purchase history, and previous interactions – was transferred accurately, enabling a seamless transition without the loss of valuable data. With a large customer database and extensive historical data, careful planning and execution were essential to ensure the integrity of the migration and preserve all valuable customer information.

Following the migration to Klaviyo, the next priority was to establish a strong sender reputation to ensure emails consistently reached subscribers’ inboxes.

This was achieved through a structured email warm-up process, starting with carefully selected, highly engaged audience segments before gradually increasing the sending volume. This approach allowed Klaviyo’s sending reputation to be built progressively, helping maximize deliverability and inbox placement from the start.

One of the key elements of the strategy was implementing a comprehensive customer segmentation framework. Using the migrated customer data, the email list was segmented into three primary groups based on product preferences:

Streetwear: Customers with a preference for trendy and casual streetwear.
Luxury Menswear: Customers interested in premium men’s fashion.
Casual: Customers who prefer everyday casual clothing.

In addition, customers were segmented based on their lifecycle stage, including new, returning, and inactive customers. This made it possible to develop highly targeted and personalized email campaigns and automated flows for each audience segment.

By tailoring communication to each customer’s preferences and purchasing behavior, engagement increased significantly, resulting in higher conversion rates and a more relevant customer experience.

Based on the migrated customer data and newly created segments, a series of automated email flows was developed to align with every stage of the customer journey. Each flow was designed to deliver the right message at the right time, ensuring communication remained relevant throughout the customer lifecycle.

This approach made it possible to engage customers with personalized content, including tailored product recommendations and offers based on their individual needs and interests.
By leveraging dynamic content, email content was personalized according to each customer’s preferences, purchase history, and on-site behavior, creating a more relevant and engaging experience.

Doelstellingen

Results

Within three months of migrating from Brevo to Klaviyo, email revenue increased by 640% and total revenue grew by 23%. Over the following five months, customer retention increased by 54%.
